Directors
and Coaches
The
Directors of the Minnesota Stars are Brad, Tim and Ron Hested. Brad was one of
the founding directors of the Minnesota Stars and has several years of coaching
experience at the elite AAU level. Tim Hested is the founding director of
Hoops 101 Basketball Schools, and has several years experience coaching at the
elite AAU level. Ron Hested provides valuable insight and experience to
the Stars team. His 35 years of head high school coaching experience
provides steady leadership to our program. Our goal is to provide the best
AAU experience in the country to the girls that are in our program.
Brad, Tim and Ron
also run the Stars Scouting Service - a recruiting guide for college coaches
that accurately rates the top 100 players in the state of Minnesota. The
Stars Scouting Service also organizes and runs two top exposure events.
The adidas Mid American Women's Basketball Championships is a premier national
tournament during the July "live" recruiting period, and the adidas Stars Shootout
every September, a one day "live" event with top Dl and Dll college
coaches analyzing over 175 players.
In the last
5 seasons we showed that hard
work, quality coaching and top talent can lead to outstanding success on
the basketball court. With the partnerships of All Star Girls
Report, adidas, and the Stars Scouting Report the
Minnesota Stars elite basketball program offers young women the best
opportunity to take their game to the next level and become a top college
basketball recruit!!!
Our 2008 coaching staff is
a top notch "professional staff". From Minnesota State Hall of
Fame Coach (Ron Hested), to coaches who have had their teams in
the State High School Tournaments (Willie Taylor), to a couple of the best, young up and coming coaches in
High School and AAU, the 2008
Minnesota Stars Coaching Staff is a solid group of professional
coaches.
Mark Smith 16U
President
of the Minnesota Stars, Mark has coached
at the AAU Level for 10 years. 6 of those in Indiana with 4
years here in MN. In 2001 coached his 12's team to a State
Championship in the state of Indiana. In 2004 he formed
the team ATTITUDE and coached the 15's team to various AAU
tournament wins with a 2nd place finish in the GREAT Lakes
Shootout. Mark will add tremendous energy and
professionalism to our staff.
Tim Hested 16U
Director of the Minnesota Stars and the Stars Scouting Service. Has coached elite girls
basketball for 8 years. His teams have won the Minnesota 16U
State Championship 2 out of the last 5 and have been second or
third in the other years.
Tom Eckmann 16U
Director of the Minnesota Stars, Tom is one of recruiting guru's of the Minnesota Stars.
The father of a Minnesota Star player (Rachelle), Tom adds
instant credibility to the program when he is out and about on
the recruiting trail. "Tiny" as he is called is the
ultimate ambassador for the Minnesota Stars Program.
Bruce Borowicz 16U
Director of the Minnesota Stars, Bruce has coached AAU with the South of the River
Racers over the past 4 seasons leading the team to successful
tournament trips to Memphis, TN and Portland, OR the past two
summers. On the high school level Bruce has served as an
assistant coach with the Jordan girls program for 2 years and as
the head coach of Lake Park - Audubon girls basketball as well.
He spent 5 years as an assistant coach at the college level with
Moorhead State University, Moorhead, MN and Pacific University,
Forest Grove, OR. His duties included assisting the varsity
teams, coaching posts, and serving as Head Coach of the Junior
Varsity teams.
Scott Antl 11U
Director of Minnesota Stars, cott is currently an assistant
girls coach at Centennial High School. He has
coached in youth basketball (AAU) &
(Traveling) programs for the past 10 years. In the 03' - 04'
season he won the state championship at the 14U level. He
has also coached girls fast pitch softball and has been to
Nationals the past 4 years and last year his team finished 5th
in the nation.
Dave DeWitt 16U
In Coach Dave DeWitt’s first season at the helm of the Anoka
Ramsey Women’s Basketball program he guided the Golden Rams to a
26-4 record, the MCCC Southern Division Championship, the MCCC
State Championship, the Region 13A Championship and the 2007
NJCAA Division III National Championship. Along the way, he
earned Region, District and National Coach of the Year Honors.
Coach DeWitt brings more than 30 years of coaching experience to
the Minnesota Stars program. In 1985, Coach DeWitt
moved on to Centennial High School where for 16 years he served
as Head Coach of Boys Basketball. During this time his
Centennial teams won 2 conference championships, advanced to the
section championship game on 2 other occasions and he became the
winningest boy’s basketball coach in school history. In 1997 he
was selected by his peers to serve as Coach for the MBCA
all-star series and in 1999 selected again by his peers as
Section Coach of the Year. DeWitt continues to teach Physical
Education at Centennial High School and serves as Department
Chair as well.
Coach DeWitt also runs a metro summer league for boys and girls
at various metro area sites and directs several summer
basketball camps including a Shooting and Scoring camp at Spring
Lake Park High School, a specialty camp for Post Players at
Northwestern College in Roseville and a week long boys Christian
Basketball boarding camp also at Northwestern College.
Kevin Carlisle 15U
Kevin is the Minneapolis
Curfew/Truancy Director. He has worked with youth for over
sixteen years. Kevin was Director/Coach of the Minnesota
Total Package Girl’s Basketball team since 1996. He has coach
his own program for eleven years. His team’s have won numerous
1st & 2nd places during the AAU seasons.
His 15 & Under team from 2006 finished 2nd place in
the State. Also, he was the Head Coach for the Varsity
Boy’s Basketball for St. Agnes and Varsity Girl’s Basketball St.
Paul Academy and Summit School.
He has received several community awards from the Hennepin
County Attorney Office – Community Leadership Award 2003,
Minnesota Timberwolves/Lynx and Jostens – Heroes In the Making
2001, and Diamonds in the Rough – Pioneer of Girl’s and Women’s
Basketball 2001.
Ron Hested 14U
A retired Minnesota Hall of Fame boys basketball coach
from Fairmont. Ron has worked with elite girls teams for 3
years. He assisted Tim Hested with the 2003 16U State AAU
Championship team. He runs several of the Hoops 101 schools
throughout the state. One of the best teachers involved in girls
elite basketball. Ron is number 21 on the list of all time wins
for boys coaches in the state of Minnesota with 508.
Barry Peterson 14U
Barry is in his second year
of coaching with the Minnesota Stars. He is an energetic
and positive coach who has the ability to get his teams to play
beyond their ability. A great student of the game Barry
has quickly become a great asset to our program and top flight
coach.
Curt Setter 14U
Curt joins the Stars with years of
basketball experience. Curt's background includes the head
boys coach at Minnetonka High School and was also an assistant
coach at the University of North Dakota with Dave Gunther.
Curt as worked for 15 years at various summer camps for
boys and girls. He also coached a variety of successful
teams. Curt is also a referee for college basketball games
throughout the Midwest.
Todd
Anderson 13U
Todd joins the MN Stars with several
year of high school coaching experience at various levels.
Nate Higgins
Nate brings a great back ground and
energy to the Minnesota Stars. He comes to the Minnesota
Stars with many years of head coaching and experience in the
game of basketball. He has coached for 6 years as the head
boys coach at Montgomery Lonsdale HS. He has worked for 7
years at coach K's camp at Duke University. He also has
experience coaching at the college level, spending a year at
Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato.
Jamie Jones 11U
Jamie is a sophomore at Concordia University where she is
a member of the Women's basketball team. Jamie was one of
the best leaders ever to play with the MN Stars. Here
energy and love for the game of basketball shows every time she
plays. Known for her big heart, she will be a great asset
to the Stars organization.
At Irondale HS she
led the conference with an Irondale
single-season record 535 points, 52 three-pointers, 148 steals
and 118 assists during 2004-05 season ... earned nine total
letters: four in basketball, three in volleyball and two in
track ... named all-metro first team and first team all-defense.
Jamie was a three-time all-conference basketball performer and
two-time all-conference volleyball player. She was a two-time
basketball team MVP and captain and she arned academic honor
roll. Jamie participated on the student council, the
leadership committee, in the Business Professionals of America,
as a mentor, and in leadership training.
